Vertovec - Towards post‐multiculturalism?

Vertovec, S. (2010). Towards post‐multiculturalism? Changing communities, conditions and contexts of diversity. International Social Science Journal, 61(199): 83–95.

This article explores the challenges faced by multiculturalism in the post-millennium era. It highlights the changing nature of global migration and immigrant integration, which have significantly evolved since the establishment of multicultural models. The article addresses questions regarding the shifting public discourses surrounding multiculturalism, the characteristics of new immigration patterns, the impact of these patterns on multicultural theories, and the relationships between immigrants and their sending countries. It also discusses the criticisms of multiculturalism and the need to reevaluate its principles. It examines the emergence of super-diversity, diasporic identification, and transnationalism as significant factors shaping contemporary diversity. The article concludes by considering the prospects of post-multicultural perspectives that seek to recognize diversity while maintaining collective national identities.
