In cultural policy research, there are few theoretical analyses of participatory governance in culture in the direct sense of the concept, i.e., sharing the responsibility of governance among various stakeholders. This is especially the case when it comes to those approaches to participation that define it not as ‘simply about joining in the game’ but ‘also about having the possibility to question the rules of the game’ (Sternfeld, 2013: 4).
This collection of papers was created as a result of the UNESCO-IFCD-funded project on participatory governance of cultural institutions. Its introductory part offers a wide theoretical coverage and analysis of concepts such as cultural participation, decentralisation, local cultural planning and development and participatory governance in culture. Following that, there are detailed case studies on the practices of participatory governance in seven socio-cultural centres in Croatia. The book also proposes recommendations and an analytical framework for changes in cultural policy.
