Navas, López-Rodríguez & Cuadrado - Maintenance and cultural adaptation of different immigrant groups

Navas, M. S., López-Rodríguez, L., & Cuadrado, I. (2013). Maintenance and cultural adaptation of different immigrant groups: Predictor variables. Anales de Psicología / Annals of Psychology, 29(1): 207-216.

This study aimed to analyse the different acculturation orientations expressed by immigrants of different origins in Spain and the psychosocial and sociodemographic variables that predicted such acculturation options. A correlational study was carried out in which Moroccan (N = 71), Romanian (N = 74), and Ecuadorian (N = 70) immigrants responded to a questionnaire expressing their tendency to maintain the culture of origin, to adapt to the host culture, and their perceived duty to adapt to the host culture. Stereotypes about Spaniards were also measured in the dimensions of warmth and competence, exogroup threat, identification with the endogroup, perceived intergroup similarity, nature of contact with the exogroup, perception of intergroup relationship, perceived enrichment due to immigration, and some sociodemographic variables. The results showed that the three immigrant groups differed in their acculturation orientations and psychosocial variables. In addition, the predictors for acculturation orientations were also different depending on the group considered. These results emphasize the need for specific interventions, as each immigrant group faces the acculturation process differently.
