Laitinen & Pessi - Solidarity
Laitinen, A., & Pessi, A. B. (Eds.) (2015). Solidarity: Theory and Practice. Lanham, MD: Lexington Books. ISBN: 978-0-7391-7727-3
Twelve chapters of this edited collection present contributions written by philosophers, social psychologists and social scientists in an attempt to discuss contemporary social reality from the viewpoint of solidarity and their respective disciplines. The result is a body of work that examines the nature of different kinds of solidarity and assesses the normative and explanatory potential of the concept. The general approach is based on the view that theoretical knowledge and reflections should be enriched by in-depth empirical studies, and vice versa.
Solidarity is conceptualised as a special emotionally and ethically responsive relation. Its various aspects are studied, including the nature of collective emotions and mutual recognition, responsiveness to others’ suffering and need, and the nature of moral partiality that is included in solidarity. Institutional changes in legal constitutions and contemporary work life are also addressed. Initial reactions to this volume described it as the first comprehensive treatment of the subject and a cornerstone for all its future examinations.
