Hall - Cultural Identity and Diaspora

Hall, S. (1990). Cultural Identity and Diaspora. In J. Rutherford (Ed.) Identity: Community, Culture, Difference, (222-237). London: Lawrence & Wishart.

This essay by Stuart Hall represents an early attempt to situate identity within a notion of society as consisting of a plethora of different overlapping and sometimes conflicting communities and cultural influences. It is still relevant not only as an implicit description of the hybridisation of cultures through the notion of creolisation but also as an important positioning of how identity should be studied in a relational, non-essentialist way. It is also an early example of his approach to the production of identities by means of visual representation.
