García-Antón - Art and Solidarity Reader

García-Antón, K. (Ed.) (2022). Art and Solidarity Reader: Radical Actions, Politics and Friendships. Office for Contemporary Art Norway/Valiz, Amsterdam. ISBN: 978-9493246027

This reader has been created as a response to solidarity’s re-entering the contemporary art scene. By presenting different historical cases it attempts to provide materials that could help understand why solidarity is an important ideal; why it is a re-occurring feature within the art field; and how it could be approached and defined differently from different arts perspectives.

The collection gathers microhistories from the 1970s to today, presenting collective responses to the multiple crises related to migration, colonialism, rising radicalisation, religious conflicts, class divisions, new technology, heteronormativity, and environmental urgencies. The presented case studies come from countries as different as Chile (Museo Internacional de la Resistencia), France (Espace Khiasma), Haiti (Ouvertures), Hungary (The Guerilla Fighter), India (SAHMAT), Indonesia (Jatiwangi Art Factory (JaF); INLAND), Korea (Gwangju Biennale), Mexico (Zapatistas, Indigenous women’s movements), Norway (Palestinian Art Exhibition), the Middle East (Farewell to Museums), Palestine (PLO), South Africa (FESTAC ’77, Chimurenga, ANC), Sudan (the power of books), the United Kingdom (Greenham Common), and the USA (gender binaries, Art Contre Apartheid, Black Lives Matter).
